A black fabric armband is a traditional sign of mourning, particularly in the UK. Though the etiquette was more clearly defined in the Victorian period (1800s), the amount of black you wore in mourning was in direct proportion to your relationship with the deceased. A wealthy widow might have an entire wardrobe made in black and servants would wear black armbands. It's still used in mourning, but it has also become a symbol of protest (www.friendsofmicronesia.com/arch....htm, home.comcast.net/~armbandp...debar.html . . .).
