tatt pics...how?

how does one go about taking a good pic of tattoos. my friend and took a whole roll of film of our ink. not one came out really good... ok we did use a little 35m camera... but from now i'll use my old faithful 35m with me focusing instead of the camera doing it.
...but any ideas... backdrops? lighting? where? flash no flash...

    I use a digital camera, but I have had the artist take photos indoors with a "covered" flash. If you take them outside, its best to do it early morning or late afternoon. You want to avoid direct sun, it will cause harch contrast.....
